A treadmill in a row of empty cardio machines can seem like a remote island — hardly an appealing place to spend one’s lunch break. Even the most motivated people might bow out of workplace wellness programs if they don’t feel empowered.

A little friendly competition and group interaction (away from the conference room) can increase camaraderie among team members. “It helps foster that sense of community,” Koger explains. “In some situations, an individual has told us that making a new connection has allowed them to be more productive at work because they learned what this person did and found them to be a great resource for what they were trying to accomplish.”
